Germany: in the wake of the Solingen attack, Olaf Scholz promises to “very quickly” toughen legislation on the carrying of weapons

On the eve of regional elections in which the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is likely to top the polls, Olaf Scholz also pledged to “do everything” to “deport those who cannot and must not stay in Germany”, as the tragedy has rekindled the debate on the country's migration policy.

On Monday August 26, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the murderous attack in Solingen - which left three people dead and eight injured on Friday August 23 - as an act of “terrorism against all of us”, for which a Syrian suspected of links with the Islamic State (EI) organization has been arrested. During his visit, he said he was “angry (...) at the Islamists who threaten peaceful coexistence between us all”.

He also promised to “very quickly” toughen legislation on the carrying of weapons and to “do everything” to “expel those who cannot and must not remain in Germany”, as the tragedy reignited the debate on the country's migration policy.
